The ev'ie Citroen C1 is the UK's first all-electric car with four seats. It has a useful range of 60 miles its main attribute is the seating capacity in a "proper" car, not a glass-fibre-bodied electric quadricycle. This Citroen C1has the engine removed and the engine bay filled with batteries and electric motors. It also has the sort of equipment levels buyers now expect and, more importantly, a full complement of airbags and impact-absorbing crash structures. That solid platform also means it's likely to be more comfortable than some of the fragile-feeling electric offerings currently on sale. As well as zero emissions, the C1 benefits from exemption from congestion charging, zero road tax, free parking at designated spaces. The clinching factor has to be low fuel costs – the Electric Car Company claims a typical six-hour charge from empty to full will cost about £1.00 The company buys C1s from Citroen at fleet rates, then removes the engines, adding 16 battery cells in the engine bay and another nine where the fuel tank used to be. The boot space is identical to that of the standard C1, as are the driveshafts and indeed all the running gear, including the Citroen's electrically assisted steering and the servo-assisted brakes. Cost £17300 new.
